Mat 6:5-13 KJV
(5)And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
(6)But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
(7)But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
(8)Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
(9)After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
(10)Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
(11)Give us this day our daily bread.
(12)And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
(13)And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Let's explore bits of this passage a little bit as it relates us to the book of Daniel. It seems as though Daniel was well informed in the art of prayer and how to practice it according to Matthew 6:6.
Matthew 6:6 KJV
(6)But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Daniel 6:3-10 KJV
(3)Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
(4)Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
(5)Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
(6)Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.
(7)All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
(8)Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
(9)Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
(10)Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
(13)And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
If we slow down the the pace of our reading in this verse we discover that every subject addressed by Jesus is a very extreme connection to Daniel and his 3 Hebrew friends.
Dan 1:1-6 KJV
(1)In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
(2)And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
(3)And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;
(4)Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
(5)And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
(6)Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
Mat 6:13 KJV
(13)And lead us not into temptationG3986,but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Let's look at our first subject which is temptation. This word makes a very interesting word study.

Quite frankly this is a word study directly related through the holy spirit. The words flow from one end of sin to the other to the point of describing the cross and how it overcomes the temptations or sins we have committed in our lives. There will no doubt be a few folks out there asking how does this demonstrate anything. Well for starters look at the last 2 words in the study above. The association of the cross and what Jesus went through for us is quite evident is it not? The sacrifice in substitution of the world on the cross by Jesus overcomes our guilt simply by believing in His death and Resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:14-20 KJV
(14)And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
(15)Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
(16)For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
(17)And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
(18)Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
(19)If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
(20)But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
Keeping our above word study in mind let's focus the word temptation into our current study. If you have sojourned with me throughout the extremities of Daniel, you might recall our look at the trial of 10 days without eating the king's diet.
Dan 1:8-21 KJV
(8)But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
(9)Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
(10)And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
(11)Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
(12)Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.(13)Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
(14)So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
(15)And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.
(16)Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
(17)As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
(18)Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
(19)And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
(20)And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
(21)And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
We also know that at some point in the future a period of 10 days in prison is in store for the people who will not take the mark of the beast. We should stop to take a couple of looks for just a moment at these events that are going to take place which resemble Daniel's situation concerning refusal of temptation. We have mentioned before how devestating to most of the Jewish people this march out of the promised land would have been. By reasoning we can determine that the extreme faith of the 4 Hebrew nobles to the point of a 10 day trial over food was something the average citizen was not demonstrating.
Revelation 2:8-11 KJV
(8)And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
(9)I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
(10)Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
(11)He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 13:16-18 KJV
(16)And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
(17)And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
(18)Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
A person who does not carry the mark of the beast will be unable to obtain food or other needs by purchase. The individuals who fit this category due to a conversion to Jesus as the Son and Savior of the living God. It appears the circumstances will be near identical. The one thing for certain is that the trials of Revelation 2 will result in death for many.
Revelation 13:15 KJV
(15)And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
Revelation 2:10 KJV
(10)Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
In the course Jesus' ministry we know He also faced some temptations from Satan himself.
Matthew 4:1-11
(1)Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
(2)And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
(3)And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
(4)But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
(5)Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
(6)And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
(7)Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
(8)Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
(9)And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
(10)Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
(11)Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Matthew 4:3-4
(3)And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
(4)But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
The tempter as we see uses food as his first efforts to influence Jesus. Maybe God is preparing the world for the coming evil that will take place in the not so distant future. We as a world have witnessed throughout history the effects of famines in the world. These were foretold and demonstrated to us throughout the Bible.
Genesis 12:9-10
(9)And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.
(10)And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.
Gen 26:5-8 KJV
(5)Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
(6)And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
(7)And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
(8)And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
Gen 47:1-7 KJV
(1)Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.
(2)And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.
(3)And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.(4)They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.
(5)And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee:
(6)The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.
(7)And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
Ruth 1:1 KJV
(1)Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2 Samuel 21:1 KJV
(1)Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
2 Samuel 24:13 KJV
(13)So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
As we can see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had encounters with famine. It was a famine that God used to bring the 12 tribes back to their full strength when Jacob and the brothers of Joseph came into the land of Goshen. It was also the interpretation by Joseph of the dream Pharaoh was having concerning the famine that brought him to power among Egypt. One thing that is interesting about these events is that each one of these men that these verses are concerned with had very great parallels to the book of Daniel. They were all considered leaders amongst the people. All of the above in one way or another spent time in captivity or lived in foreign lands. They all obtained great favor not only with God but also acquired great respect in the sense of awe such as the Philistines, Egyptians and Babylonians to name a few.
(5)And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Daniel 1:15-17 KJV(15)And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.
(16)Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
(17)As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

(28)Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
