The Isaiah Factor 10: 20-34
The Remnant of Israel Will Return
The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked
Psa 1:1-6 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. (2) But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. (3) And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. (4) The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. (5) Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. (6) For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Ecc 1:9-11 KJV The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (10) Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. (11) There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
Ecc 3:14-15 KJV I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. (15) That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
Ecc 3:16-17 KJV And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there. (17) I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
Mat 5:17-20 KJV Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (18) For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (19) Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (20) For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:17 KJV Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
The Example of Christ
Rom 15:1-7 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (2) Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. (3) For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. (4) For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (5) Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: (6) That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (7) Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.
Rom 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Hello again Friends. We are continuing with Isaiah 10. We will be looking at the last passage. It includes verses 20-34.
The Remnant of Israel Will Return
Isa 10:20-26 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. (21) The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. (22) For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. (23) For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land. (24) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt. (25) For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction. (26) And the LORD of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
Isa 10:27-34 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. (28) He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages: (29) They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled. (30) Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth. (31) Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee. (32) As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. (33) Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. (34) And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
Let’s do a quick recap of what we have studied so far in Isaiah 10.
Isa 10:1-4 Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed; (2) To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! (3) And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory? (4) Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
In verses 1-4 the judgment is assigned to all those who act in authority out of greed and whatever else could be gained. The following passage we explored was verses 20-34 which was judgment being pronounced upon the weapon used in the judgment, the Assyrian empire.
Judgment on Arrogant Assyria
Isa 10:5-6 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. (6) I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
Isa 10:15-19 Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood. (16) Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire. (17) And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; (18) And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth. (19) And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
Now we know the people ABBA Father is pronouncing against. The political and the clergy have the judgment announced. We understand the weapon of judgment to be Assyria. We know that ABBA Father has pronounced His judgment upon that nation or empire as well. With this in mind let’s start our journey into the remnant of Israel.
The Remnant of Israel Will Return
Isa 10:20-24 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnantH7605of Israel, and such as are escapedH6413of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. (22) For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. We wanted to study these words because they imply much more than the way the KJV interprets here. We are literally looking at deliverance according to ABBA Father. When ABBA Father speaks of deliverance you can bet it means from something there is no way out of. Conquering empires or nations especially the Assyrians were particularly cruel. They were noted for being the most cruel empire in biblical history. So if ABBA Father describes deliverance from these attacks it is in a major way. That these people who are delivered will be returning to The Holy One of Israel.
The subject of the remnant is one found multiple times in scripture. The word is found in the KJV search we did 92 times. Over 85 of these are found in the OT. Generally when we are exploring prophecy there are 2 times that there were remnants left after the total destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. The 2 times being the first when ABBA Father allowed Babylon to destroy the temple. This was in 586BC. The next being when the Romans did the same in 70AD.
The word we studied above

Is found 12 times here in Isaiah. The first 2 of these are found here in this passage. As we progress through our journeys here in Isaiah we will be exploring these. One other thing we would like to mention here about our other word study.

One thing we should mention here is that the deliverance coming in the form of the rapture. We see an application of the word escape used by Lord Yeshua in the signs of the end of the age. We will look at a passage from Luke 21.
Watch Yourselves
Luk 21:34-38 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. (35) For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. (36) Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthyG2661to escapeG1628all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. (37) And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives. (38) And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

For myself every time I read this it reminds me I have some things yet to take care of with ABBA Father and Lord Yeshua. To find ourselves entirely deserving to escape the end of the age events by the rapture. A NT parallel to what we are seeing in the OT.
Isa 10:21-24 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
ABBA Father sums up the damage that would come to the population of the people. He describes a population as the sand of the sea and how it will be reduced to a small remnant. Then the prophecy takes another turn toward the judgment of His instrument Assyria with same power He dealt with Egypt. In other words ABBA Father is going to do something unimaginable. We have studied the judgment on Assyria within some of our earlier journeys. We believe it was in the 7 Spirits of ABBA Father which are found in Isaiah 11 our next chapter.
Isa 10:25 For yet a very little while, and the indignationH2195shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction.

זַעַם
za‛am
zah'-am From H2194; strictly froth at the mouth, that is, (figuratively) fury (especially of God’s displeasure with sin): - angry, indignation, rage. Total KJV occurrences: 22
This word indignation is a very important one indeed. It is the same word we
read in verse 5.
Isa 10:5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.
In our rapture series of studies we explored this word in Isaiah 26 in particular. We will show this for an example of what we are talking about.
Isa 26:16-21 LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them. (17) Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD. (18) We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen. (19) Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. (20) Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignationH2195be overpast. (21) For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
We feel in this case that this is an OT reference to the NT concept of the rapture. There are also other OT passages connected to the rapture. Since we are not here to develop those things right now we recommend The Rapture Then The Rapture Now studies. In the passage above indignation is synonymous with tribulation.
Isa 10:26-27 And the LORD of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt. (27) And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.
Again ABBA Father describes a slaughter in a major major way. The slaughter of Midian is found in the book of Judges.
Jdg 7:23-25 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites. (24) And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. (25) And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.
King Sennacherib was be leading the charge for the Assyrians. The Assyrian empire was the shortest reigning empire in our list of biblical empires. However they were the most cruel by far.
The next few verses describe prophetically the route Sennacherib would take on his conquest.
Isa 10:28-30 He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages: (29) They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled. (30) Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth.
Aiath is a new name for the ancient area of Hai. This is where Abraham built his first altar to the Lord. He builds it between Bethel and Hai.
Gen 12:7-9 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. (8) And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. (9) And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.
It goes on to become Ai in the book of Joshua. Joshua eventually has the city burned and completely destroyed. We will use Smith’s Bible Dictionary to study a little about these locations.
A'i. (heap of ruins).
1. A city lying east of Bethel and "beside Bethaven." Jos_7:2; Jos_8:9. It was the second city taken by Israel after the passage of the Jordan, and was "utterly destroyed." Jos_7:3-5; Jos_8:1; Jos_9:3; Jos_10:1-2; Jos_12:9.
2. A city of the Ammonites, apparently attached to Heshbon. Jer_49:3.
Mig'ron. (precipice). A town or a spot, in the neighborhood of Gibeah. 1Sa_14:23. Migron is also mentioned in Sennacherib's approach to Jerusalem. Isa_10:28.
Mich'mash. (hidden). A town which is known to us, almost solely, by its connection with the Philistine war of Saul and Jonathan. 1Sa_13:1; 1Sa_14:1. It has been identified, with great probability, in a village which still bears the name of Mukhmas, about seven miles north of Jerusalem. The place was, thus, situated in the very middle of the tribe of Benjamin. In the invasion of Sennacherib, in the reign of Hezekiah, it is mentioned by Isaiah. Isa_10:28. After the captivity, the man of the place returned. Ezr_2:27; Neh_7:31.
Isa 10:29 They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.
Ge'ba. (a hill). A city of Benjamin, with "suburbs," allotted to the priests. Jos_21:17; 1Ch_6:60. It is named amongst the first group of the Benjamite towns — apparently those lying near to and along the north boundary. Jos_18:24. Here the name is given as Gaba.
During the wars of the earlier part of the reign of Saul, Geba was held as a garrison by the Philistines, 1Sa_13:3, but they were ejected by Jonathan. It is now the modern village of Jeba, which stands picturesquely on the top of its steep terraced hill, six miles north of Jerusalem, on the very edge of the great Wady Suweinit, looking northward to the opposite village of ancient Michmash, which also retains its old name of Mukhmas.
Ra'mah. (a hill). This is the name of several places in the Holy Land.
1. One of the cities, of the allotment of Benjamin. Jos_18:25. Its site is at er-Ram, about five miles from Jerusalem, and near to Gibeah. Jdg_4:5; Jdg_19:13; 1Sa_22:6. Its people returned after the captivity. Ezr_2:26; Neh_7:30.
2. The home of Elkanah, Samuel's father, 1Sa_1:19; 1Sa_2:11, the birthplace of Samuel himself, his home and official residence, the site of his altar, 1Sa_7:17; 1Sa_8:4; 1Sa_15:34; 1Sa_16:13; 1Sa_19:18, and finally, his burial-place, 1Sa_25:1; 1Sa_28:3. It is a contracted form of Ramathaim-zophim.
Gib'e-ah. A word employed in the Bible to denote a hill. Like most words of this kind, it gave its name to several towns and places in Palestine, which would doubtless be generally on or near a hill. They are —
1. Gibeah, a city in the mountain district of Judah, named with Maon and the southern Carmel, Jos_15:57, and compare 1Ch_2:49, etc.
2. Gibeah of Benjamin, first appears in the tragical story of the Levite and his concubine. Jdg_19:20. It was then a "city," with the usual open street or square, Jdg_19:15; Jdg_19:17; Jdg_19:20, and containing 700 "chosen men," Jdg_20:15, probably the same whose skill as slingers is preserved in the next verse.
Isa 10:30 Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth.
Gal'lim. (fountains). This is given as the native place of the man to whom Michal, David's wife, was given. 1Sa_25:44. There is no clue to the situation of the place. The name occurs again in the catalogue of places, terrified at the approach of Sennacherib. Isa_10:30.
La'ish. (lion). Father of Phaltiel, to whom Saul had given Michal, David's wife. 1Sa_25:44; 2Sa_3:15.
Anathoth. (answers to prayer).
1. Son of Becher, a son of Benjamin. 1Ch_7:8.
2. One of the "heads of the people" who signed the covenant in the time of Nehemiah. Neh_10:19. (B.C. 410).
3. A priests' city belonging to the tribe of Benjamin, with "suburbs." Jos_21:18; 1Ch_6:60. Anathoth lay about three miles from Jerusalem. Isa_10:30.
Isa 10:31 Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.
Madme'nah. (dunghill). One of the Benjamite villages, north of Jerusalem, the inhabitants of which were frightened away by the approach of Sennacherib along the northern road. Isa_10:31.
Ge'bim. (grasshoppers). A village north of Jerusalem, Isa_10:31, apparently between Anathoth, (the modern Anata), and the ridge on which Nob was situated.
Isa 10:32 As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
Nob. (high place). 1Sa_22:19; Neh_11:32. A sacerdotal city in the tribe of Benjamin and situated on some eminence near Jerusalem. It was one of the places, where the Ark of Jehovah was kept for a time, during the days of its wanderings. 2Sa_6:1; etc. But the event for which Nob was most noted in the Scripture annals was a frightful massacre which occurred there in the reign of Saul. 1Sa_22:17-19.
As we can read each of these locations has a little bit of history associated with it. There are associations to Ephraim and Benjamin. These are 2 of the tribes Isaiah has been focused on. We can only invite you to do your own research on these cities if you like.
Isa 10:33 Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.
John Gill’s Expository Notes on the Bible
Isaiah 10:33
Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror,.... Cut off the king of Assyria and his army, in a most terrible manner; "the glory" of it, as in Isa_10:18 the word signifies that which is the ornament, the beauty and glory, of the tree. The Septuagint render it, "the glorious ones"; and the Arabic version, "the nobles", the generals, and principal officers of the army; the Targum is,
"behold, the Lord of the world, the Lord of hosts, shall cast forth the slain in his camp, as grapes that are trod in a winepress.''
And the high ones of stature shall be hewn down; the princes of Assyria, so boasted of as kings, Isa_10:8 comparable to tall trees, to oaks and cedars:
and the haughty shall be humbled; who, like their monarch, boasted of their wisdom and strength, Isa_10:12 but now both he and they will be brought very low.
Isa 10:34 And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
Leb'anon.
Two distinct ranges bear this name. They run in parallel lines from southwest to northeast for about 90 geographical miles, enclosing between them a long, fertile valley from five to eight miles wide, anciently called Coele-Syria. The western range is the "Libanus" of the old geographers and the Lebanon of Scripture. The eastern range was called "Anti-Libanus" by geographers, and "Lebanon toward the sunrising" by the sacred writers. Jos_13:5.
Lebanon — the western range — commences on the south of the deep ravine of the Litany, the ancient river Leontes, which drains the valley of Cole-Syria, and falls into the Mediterranean five miles north of Tyre. It runs northeast in a straight line parallel to the coast, to the opening from the Mediterranean into the plain of Emesa, called in Scripture the "entrance of Hamath." Num_34:8. Here Nehr el-Kebir — the ancient river Eleutherus — sweeps round its northern end, as the Leontes does round its southern.
The average elevation of the range is from 6000 to 8000 feet; but two peaks rise considerably higher. On the summits of both these peaks, the snow remains in patches during the whole summer. The line of cultivation runs along at the height of about 6000 feet; and below this the features of the western slopes are entirely different. The rugged limestone banks are scantily clothed with the evergreen oak, and the sandstone with pines; while every available spot is carefully cultivated. The cultivation is wonderful, and shows what all Syria might be if under a good government. Fig trees cling to the naked rock; vines are trained along narrow ledges; long ranges of mulberries, on terraces like steps of stairs, cover the more gentle declivities; and dense groves of olives fill up the bottoms of the glens.
We cannot rule out something similar to this could take place in the future. Getting back into that dual nature of Isaiah’s prophecies. During his time frame and ours you could say. Some scholars in the past and still do predict the antichrist could be an Assyrian. We will not go there for now. We would just like to remind people that there is still no peace on the table between Israel and Syria.
It’s also interesting that our president Trump just told Israel to pull out of Lebanon and Syria. We are not real happy with some of the strong arming of Israel we have seen from time to time. It would be good to remember that at some point in all this you stop being a conservative or a republican and remember to be Bible believing Christian. Keeping that in mind we always like to mention right about now
Woe to Unrepentant Cities
Mat 11:20-24 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: (21) Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. (22) But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. (23) And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. (24) But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest
Mat 11:25-30 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. (26) Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. (27) All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. (28) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Wait for the God of Salvation
Mic 7:1-7 Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit. (2) The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net. (3) That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up. (4) The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity. (5) Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. (6) For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house. (7) Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
