Welcome to the World of Biblical Prophecy for History and Today

This Blog is intended to help myself and others gain the best understanding of the world around us through exploration of prophetic scripture. The Bible is the text book. Through these studies we will hopefully provide understanding to both believer and unbeliever alike. The way our God and our Savior Jesus distinguish themselves in the spiritual world is through prophetic means. In other words what the Bible teaches us through fullfillment of these prophecies shows us the truth. Let's take some prophetic journeys through history and at the same time learn about the world around us today. Please try and be patient with any typographical errors as I am my own typist and my own research staff. Thanks

Isaiah Factor 5: 1-14 The Vineyard and The Wicked

Isaiah Factor 5: 1-14
The Vineyard and The Wicked

Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

Psa 119:81-88  CAPH. My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.  (82)  Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?  (83)  For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.  (84)  How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?  (85)  The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law.  (86)  All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.  (87)  They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.  (88)  Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

Ecc 1:9-11 KJV  The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.  (10)  Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.  (11)  There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Ecc 3:14-15 KJV  I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.  (15)  That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

Ecc 3:16-17 KJV  And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.  (17)  I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

Mat 5:17-20 KJV  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.  (18)  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.  (19)  Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  (20)  For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:17 KJV  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

The Example of Christ

Rom 15:1-7  We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  (2)  Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.  (3)  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  (4)  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.  (5)  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:  (6)  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  (7)  Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Rom 15:4  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

The Vineyard of the Lord Destroyed

Isa 5:1-7  Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:  (2)  And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.  (3)  And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.  (4)  What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?  (5)  And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:  (6)  And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.  (7)  For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

Woe to the Wicked

Isa 5:8-16  Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!  (9)  In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.  (10)  Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.  (11)  Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!  (12)  And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.  (13)  Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.  (14)  Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.  (15)  And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:  (16)  But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

Isa 5:17-19  Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.  (18)  Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:  (19)  That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

Isa 5:20-23  Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  (21)  Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!  (22)  Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:  (23)  Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

Isa 5:24-30  Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.  (25)  Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.  (26)  And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:  (27)  None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:  (28)  Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses' hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:  (29)  Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.  (30)  And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.

Hello again Friends. We are exploring Isaiah 5 in this journey. We have been exploring connections between Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the gospels. Isaiah prophesied about events concerning the Babylonian invasion. He prophesied about both comings of Lord Yeshua.

Isa 5:1  Now will I sing to my wellbelovedH3039a song of my beloved touching his vineyardH3754. My wellbelovedH3039hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hillH8081 H7161 :

wellbelovedH3039
יְדִיד
yedı̂yd
yed-eed'  From the same as H1730; loved: - amiable, (well-) beloved, loves. Total KJV occurrences: 9

This verse starts the passage saying it is for ABBA Father’s bride in essence. It could just as easy be Lord Yeshua addressing the church. So we have a vineyard used to represent Israel perhaps more specifically Judah and Jerusalem.

vineyardH3754
כֶּרֶם
kerem
keh'-rem  From an unused root of uncertain meaning; a garden or vineyard: - ines, (increase of the) vineyard (-s), vintage. See also H1021.
Total KJV occurrences: 93

fruitful hillH8081 H7161
H8081
שֶׁמֶן
shemen
sheh'-men  From H8080; grease, especially liquid (as from the olive, often perfumed); figuratively richness: - anointing, X fat (things), X fruitful, oil ([-ed]), ointment, olive, + pine.  Total KJV occurrences: 193

fruitful hillH7161
קֶרֶן
qeren
keh'-ren  From H7160; a horn (as projecting); by implication a flask, cornet; by resemblance an elephant’s tooth (that is, ivory), a corner (of the altar), a peak (of a mountain), a ray (of light); figuratively power: -  X hill, horn.  Total KJV occurrences: 76

There are a few things we need to explore here for a few moments. In our last journey concerning the glorious BRANCH we explored the connection between Isaiah and Lord Yeshua. We explored how Lord Yeshua is represented as being THE true vine or branch bearing fruit. We will put things this way.

The fruitful hill described here sounds like the Mount of Olives. The bride of ABBA Father is the nation of Israel. ABBA Father expected then and now That Israel be good ambassadors of Himself and what He stands for. In other words a people bringing forth more fruit for the kingdom.

As we explored in our last journey Lord Yeshua explained the difference between good and bad fruit. He explained to us how He is the true vine or branch. He can bring forth the good fruit within us. Enabling us to spread the news of the kingdom that’s not far away as we understand history. Lord Yeshua is the choicest vine. He also explained how we can bring forth corrupted fruit.

Isa 5:1-2  Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard.

Isa 3:12-14  As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.  (13)  The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.  (14)  The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

The Parable of the Tenants

Mat 21:33-40  Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:  (34)  And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.  (35)  And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.  (36)  Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.  (37)  But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.  (38)  But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.  (39)  And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.  (40)  When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?

Of course the Son Lord Yeshua is speaking of is Himself.

Mat 21:41-46  They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.  (42)  Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?  (43)  Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.  (44)  And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.  (45)  And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.  (46)  But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

Mat 21:35-38  And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

Luk 20:10-12  And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.  (11)  And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.  (12)  And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

Mar 12:3-5  And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.  (4)  And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.  (5)  And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.

We suspect the 3 prophets or servants mentioned here would be Jeremiah, Zechariah and Isaiah. Many might disagree but he history fits their destinies.

Isa 5:2-4  And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapesH891.  (3)  And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.  (4)  What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapesH891?

wild grapesH891
בְּאֻשִׁים
be'ûshı̂ym
be-oo-sheem'  Plural of H889; poison berries: - wild grapes.  Total KJV occurrences: 2

Interesting that the only 2 times this word is used in the OT is found here in this passage. Instead of fulfilling their roles as His ambassadors ABBA Father instead calls out every facet of Jewish society for their unproductive behavior.

The Golden Rule

Mat 7:12-14  Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.  (13)  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:  (14)  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

A Tree and Its Fruit

Mat 7:15-20  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  (16)  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?  (17)  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.  (18)  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  (19)  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  (20)  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Isa 5:4-7  What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?  (5)  And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:  (6)  And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.  (7)  For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

ABBA Father asked the same question of the people in Isaiah 1.

Isa 1:3-5  The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.  (4)  Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.  (5)  Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

Jer 2:26-28  As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,  (27)  Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.  (28)  But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

Jer 2:29-30  Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.  (30)  In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

Jer 4:10-14  Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.  (11)  At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,  (12)  Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.  (13)  Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.  (14)  O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?

Jer 7:28  But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

Jerusalem, a Useless Vine

Eze 15:1-8  And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,  (2)  Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest?  (3)  Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon?  (4)  Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?  (5)  Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is burned?  (6)  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.  (7)  And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.  (8)  And I will make the land desolate, because they have committed a trespass, saith the Lord GOD.

The Siege of Jerusalem

Eze 24:1-6  Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,  (2)  Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.  (3)  And utter a parable unto the rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:  (4)  Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones.  (5)  Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.  (6)  Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.

Eze 24:7-10  For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;  (8)  That it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.  (9)  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great.  (10)  Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned.

Eze 24:11-14  Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed.  (12)  She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire.  (13)  In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.  (14)  I the LORD have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord GOD.

Lament over Jerusalem

Mat 23:37-39  O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!  (38)  Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.  (39)  For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

The same lament over Jerusalem when Babylon laid siege took place again when Lord Yeshua’s words were fulfilled with the Roman destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 70 AD.

As we move through these journeys we see that Jeremiah and Ezekiel were very well aware of Isaiah’s prophecies. The following passage from Isaiah 5 will demonstrate this hopefully. It starts to be more specific about what has been wrong.

Woe to the Wicked

Isa 5:8-10  Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!  (9)  In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.  (10)  Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.

Greed and covetousness is what this brings to mind. Let’s explore Albert Barnes’ Notes On The Bible.

Isaiah 5:8

Wo unto them ... - The prophet now proceeds to “specify” some of the crimes to which he had referred in the parable of the vineyard, of which the Jews had been guilty. The first is “avarice.”

That join house to house - That seek to possess many houses; or perhaps that seek to live in large and magnificent palaces. A similar denunciation of this sin is recorded in Mic_2:2; Neh_5:1-8. This, together with what follows, was contrary to the law of Moses. He provided that when the children of Israel should enter the land of Canaan, the land should be equitably divided; and in order to prevent avarice, he ordained the “jubilee,” occurring once in fifty years, by which every man and every family should be restored to their former possession; Lev. 25. Perhaps there could have been no law so well framed to prevent the existence, and avoid the evils of covetousness. Yet, in defiance of the obvious requirements and spirit of that law, the people in the time of Isaiah had beome generally covetous.

Woe to the Oppressors

Mic 2:1-6  Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.  (2)  And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.  (3)  Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go haughtily: for this time is evil.  (4)  In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.  (5)  Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD.  (6)  Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.

That lay field to field - That purchase one farm after another. The words ‘that lay,’ mean “to cause to approach;” that is, they “join” on one farm after another.

Till there be no place - Until they reach the “outer limit” of the land; until they possess all.

That they may be placed alone - That they may displace all others; that they may drive off from their lands all others, and take possession of them themselves.

Nehemiah Stops Oppression of the Poor

Neh 5:1-5  And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.  (2)  For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.  (3)  Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.  (4)  There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.  (5)  Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

Neh 5:6-13  And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.  (7)  Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.  (8)  And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.  (9)  Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?  (10)  I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.  (11)  Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.  (12)  Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.  (13)  Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

Isa 5:11-14  Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!

It would seem that the aristocratic wild partying types we are all familiar with today were a problem back then as well. After all everything evil had to have a beginning somewhere.

Pro 23:29-30  Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?  (30)  They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

Ecc 10:16-17  Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!  (17)  Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

Hab 2:15-16  Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!  (16)  Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.

A quick example of what is being described here is found in Daniel 5. The infamous passage that tells us the writing on the wall.

The Handwriting on the Wall

Dan 5:1-7  Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.  (2)  Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.  (3)  Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.  (4)  They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.  (5)  In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.  (6)  Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.  (7)  The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Dan 5:8-12  Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.  (9)  Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.  (10)  Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:  (11)  There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;  (12)  Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

We will not fully develop the passage it can be found in the Daniel Extremity studies. Let’s just say that the party came to a very abrupt and deadly ending for the Babylonian kingdom.

We have mentioned before on the page that there are many people out there in the world that believe Hell will be nothing more than a rock concert and a party. Guess what? Wrong answer. There is a banquet being prepared for us believers at this very moment in Heaven most likely. As we bring this journey to its ending we would like to remind everyone about this banquet.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

Mat 22:1-5  And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,  (2)  The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,  (3)  And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.  (4)  Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.  (5)  But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

Mat 22:6-10  And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.  (7)  But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.  (8)  Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.  (9)  Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.  (10)  So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

Mat 22:11-14  And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:  (12)  And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.  (13)  Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  (14)  For many are called, but few are chosen.

The following passage provides a description of what being sentenced to Hell will be like.

Rev 14:6-11  And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,  (7)  Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.  (8)  And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.  (9)  And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,  (10)  The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:  (11)  And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Luk 16:19-23  There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:  (20)  And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,  (21)  And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.  (22)  And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;  (23)  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Luk 16:24-26  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.  (25)  But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.  (26)  And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Luk 16:27-31  Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:  (28)  For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.  (29)  Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.  (30)  And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.  (31)  And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

Mat 11:20-24  Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:  (21)  Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.  (22)  But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.  (23)  And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.  (24)  But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

Mat 11:25-30  At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.  (26)  Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.  (27)  All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.  (28)  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  (29)  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  (30)  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Wait for the God of Salvation

Mic 7:1-7  Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.  (2)  The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.  (3)  That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up.  (4)  The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity.  (5)  Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.  (6)  For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.  (7)  Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

Empires of Prophecy 6 Abraham and Egypt

Empires of Prophecy 6
Abraham and Egypt

Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

Psa 119:73-80  JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.  (74)  They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.  (75)  I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.  (76)  Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.  (77)  Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.  (78)  Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts.  (79)  Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies.  (80)  Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

Hello again Friends. We are pushing forward with our history of Abraham and Egypt. We stopped at a point where our last known mention of Egypt was when Hagar found an Egyptian wife for Ishmael. Abraham has made a covenant of peace with Abimelech leader of the Philistines. Now we have come to the time that Abraham is asked to sacrifice Isaac.

The Sacrifice of Isaac

Gen 22:1-6  And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.  (2)  And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.  (3)  And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.  (4)  Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar offH4480 H7350.  (5)  And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.  (6)  And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

רָחֹק    רָחוֹק
râchôq    râchôq
raw-khoke', raw-khoke'  From H7368; remote, literally of figuratively, of place or time; specifically precious; often used adverbially (with preposition): - (a-) far (abroad, off), long ago, of old, space, great while to come.  Total KJV occurrences: 85

Before Abraham Was, I Am

Joh 8:48-53  Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?  (49)  Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.  (50)  And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.  (51)  Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.  (52)  Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.  (53)  Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

Joh 8:54-56  Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:  (55)  Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.  (56)  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

It seems like we have been here often enough but this is a very important part of biblical history. We spoke on this passages relationship to Lord Yeshua’s words in John 8.

Gen 22:7-10  And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?  (8)  And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.  (9)  And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.  (10)  And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

This all relates back to 1 moment. That moment being when Abraham obeyed a voice from ABBA Father to leave his homeland. ABBA Father found just 1 man He knew would do the right thing by Him. That being a willingness to slay his own son for his God. People had already been slaying their children to false gods and goddesses all along the way.

Gen 22:11-14  And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.  (12)  And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.  (13)  And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.  (14)  And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Gen 22:15-18  And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,  (16)  And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:  (17)  That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;  (18)  And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The Angel Hinders the Offering of Isaac, by Rembrandt, 1635 (Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg)

Gen 22:19-24  So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.  (20)  And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;  (21)  Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,  (22)  And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.  (23)  And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.  (24)  And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

If the name Rebekah sounds familiar it’s because she is Isaac’s wife. Since we are exploring foundations of empires we might as well state this was the beginning of the nation of Israel. If Abraham had not been that 1 human willing to obey ABBA Father there would be no Israel, no Judaism or Christianity. Of course Islam also was fathered via Abraham and Hagar.

In Genesis 23 we have the death and burial of Sarah.

Gen 23:17-20  And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure  (18)  Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.  (19)  And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.  (20)  And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.

She lived to be 127 years of age.

Isaac and Rebekah

Gen 24:1-8  And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.  (2)  And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:  (3)  And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:  (4)  But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.  (5)  And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?  (6)  And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.  (7)  The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father's house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.  (8)  And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.

Gen 24:9-19  And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.  (10)  And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.  (11)  And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.  (12)  And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.  (13)  Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:  (14)  And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.  (15)  And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.  (16)  And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.  (17)  And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.  (18)  And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.  (19)  And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.

Gen 24:29-33  And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.  (30)  And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.  (31)  And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.  (32)  And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him.  (33)  And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on.

Gen 24:34-42  And he said, I am Abraham's servant.  (35)  And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.  (36)  And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath.  (37)  And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:  (38)  But thou shalt go unto my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.  (39)  And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me.  (40)  And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father's house:  (41)  Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.  (42)  And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go:

Gen 24:43-49  Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;  (44)  And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master's son.  (45)  And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.  (46)  And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.  (47)  And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.  (48)  And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son.  (49)  And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.

Gen 24:50-56  Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.  (51)  Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD hath spoken.  (52)  And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.  (53)  And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.  (54)  And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.  (55)  And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.  (56)  And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

Gen 24:57-67  And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.  (58)  And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.  (59)  And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.  (60)  And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.  (61)  And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.  (62)  And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.  (63)  And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.  (64)  And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.  (65)  For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.  (66)  And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.  (67)  And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

Abraham's Death and His Descendants

Gen 25:1-5  Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.  (2)  And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.  (3)  And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.  (4)  And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.  (5)  And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.

Let’s use Smith’s Bible Dictionary to understand what we can about these 6 sons of Abraham’s old age.

Zimran  (celebrated). The eldest son of Keturah. Gen_25:2; 1Ch_1:32. His descendants are not mentioned, nor is any hint given that he was the founder of a tribe. (B.C. 1855).

Jokshan  (fowler). A son of Abraham and Keturah, Gen_25:2-3; 1Ch_1:32, whose sons were Sheba and Dedan.

Medan (contention). A son of Abraham and Keturah. Gen_23:5; 1Ch_1:42.

Midian (strife). A son of Abraham and Keturah, Gen_25:2; 1Ch_1:32, progenitor of the Midianites, or Arabians, dwelling principally in the desert, north of the peninsula of Arabia. Southward, they extended along the eastern shore of the Gulf of Eyleh (Sinus Aelaniticus); and northward, they stretched along the eastern frontier of Palestine. The "land of Midian," the place to which Moses fled after having killed the Egyptian, Exo_2:15; Exo_2:21, or the portion of it, specially referred to, was probably the peninsula of Sinai.

The influence of the Midianties, on the Israelites, was clearly most evil, and directly tended to lead them, from the injunctions of Moses. The events at Shittim, occasioned the injunction to vex Midian, and smite them. After a lapse of some years, the Midianites appear again, as the enemies of the Israelites, oppressing them for seven years, but are finally defeated, with great slaughter, by Gideon. See Gideon.

Ishbak (left behind). A son of Abraham and Keturah, Gen_25:2; 1Ch_1:32, and the progenitor of a tribe of northern Arabia. (B.C. after 1856).

Shuah (wealth).
1. Son of Abraham, by Keturah. Gen_25:2; 1Ch_1:32. (B.C. before 1820).
2. Properly, Shuchah, brother of Chelub. 1Ch_4:11.
3. The father of Judah's wife, Gen_38:2, Gen_38:12, called also Shua, in the Authorized Version. (B.C. before 1725).

Please note that the passage tells us that Isaac and he alone was heir to the estate of both Abraham and most importantly ABBA Father. One of the reasons we are going through this history is to drive home the fact that Isaac is the son of promise and no others. Many nations sprung forth through Abraham’s 2nd wife and Hagar through Ishmael.

Gen 25:6-11  But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.  (7)  And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.  (8)  Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.  (9)  And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;  (10)  The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.  (11)  And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.

Gen 25:12-18  Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:  (13)  And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,  (14)  And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,  (15)  Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:  (16)  These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.  (17)  And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.  (18)  And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.

Ishmael fathers 12 sons and 12 new nations. We will explore them briefly by looking at the definitions of their names. We will use Smith’s Bible Dictionary.

Gen 25:13  And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

Nebajoth Neba'joth. (heights). The "first-born of Ishmael," Gen_25:13; 1Ch_1:29, (B.C. about 1850), and father of a pastoral tribe named after him, the "rams Of Nebaioth" being mentioned by the prophet, Isaiah, Isa_60:7, with the flocks of Kedar.

2. Kedar (dark-skinned). The second, in order, of the sons of Ishmael, Gen_25:13; 1Ch_1:29, and the name of a great tribe of Arabs settled on the northwest of the peninsula and on the confines of Palestine. The "glory of Kedar" is recorded by the prophet Isaiah, Isa_21:13-17, in the burden upon Arabia; and its importance may also be inferred from the "princes of Kedar" mentioned by Ezekiel, Ezk_27:21 , as well as the pastoral character of the tribe.

3. Adbeel (offspring of God). A son of Ishmael, Gen_25:13; 1Ch_1:29, and probably the progenitor of an Arab tribe. (B.C. about 1850).

4.  Mibsam  (sweet odor). 1. A son of Ishmael. Gen_25:13; 1Ch_1:29.

Gen 25:14-15  And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,  (15)  Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:

5. Mishma  (a hearing). 1. A son of Ishmael, and brother of Mibsam. Gen_25:14; 1Ch_1:30.

6. Dumah (silence).1. A son of Ishmael, most probably, the founder of the Ishmaelite tribe of Arabia, and thence, the name of the principal place of district inhabited by that tribe. Gen_25:14; 1Ch_1:30; Isa_21:11.

7. Massa (burden). A son of Ishmael. Gen_26:14; 1Ch_1:30. His descendants were not improbably the Masani, placed by Ptolemy in the east of Arabia, near the borders of Babylonia.

8. Ha'dar. See Hadad.
(mighty). Originally, the indigenous appellation of the sun, among the Syrians, and thence, transferred to the king as the highest of earthly authorities. The title appears to have been an official one, like Pharaoh. It is found occasionally in the altered form of Hadar. Gen_25:15; Gen_36:39 compared with 1Ch_1:30; 1Ch_1:50.
1. Son of Ishmael. Gen_25:15; 1Ch_1:30.

9. Tema (a desert). The ninth son of Ishmael, Gen_25:15; 1Ch_1:30, whence, the tribe called after him, mentioned in Job_6:19; Jer_25:23, and, also, the land occupied by this tribe. Isa_21:13-14. (B.C. after 1850). The name is identified with Teyma, a small town on the confines of Syria.

10. Jetur Je'tur. (an enclosure). Gen_25:15; 1Ch_1:31; 1Ch_5:19. See Ituraea.
Iturae'a. (land of Jether). A small province on the northwestern border of Palestine, lying along the base of Mount Hermon, only mentioned in Luk_3:1. Jetur, the son of Ishmael, gave his name, like the rest of his brethren, to the little province he colonized. Gen_25:15-16.

It adjoined Trachonitis, and lay along the base of Libanus between Tiberias and Damascus. At the place indicated is situated the modern province of Jedur, which is the Arabic form of the Hebrew Jetur.

11. Naphish Na'phish. (refreshment). The last but one, of the sons of Ishmael. Gen_25:15; 1Ch_1:31.

12. Kedemah Ked'emah. (eastward). The youngest of the sons of Ishmael. Gen_25:15; 1Ch_1:31.

Gen 25:17-18  And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.  (18)  And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.

Here within the sons of Ishmael we find the foundations of the Persian Gulf states among other things. ABBA Father promised Abraham that Ishmael would be very prosperous people.

Gen 17:18-21  And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!  (19)  And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.  (20)  And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.  (21)  But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

Indeed they did become very prosperous indeed because of 1 thing most all of the world needs. That being oil.

The Birth of Esau and Jacob

Gen 25:19-26  And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:  (20)  And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.  (21)  And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.  (22)  And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.  (23)  And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.  (24)  And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.  (25)  And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.  (26)  And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

The time we are looking at is 2088 years after creation at this point. Again Abraham was born 1948. Isaac was born in his 100th year. Now we see Isaac in his 40th year taking a wife.

Gen 25:27-28  And the boys grew: and EsauH6215 was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and JacobH3290was a plain man, dwelling in tents.  (28)  And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esau Sells His Birthright

Gen 25:29-34  And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:  (30)  And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.  (31)  And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.  (32)  And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?  (33)  And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.  (34)  Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

God's Promise to Isaac

Gen 26:1-5  And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.  (2)  And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:  (3)  Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;  (4)  And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;  (5)  Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

Gen 26:6-7  And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:  (7)  And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

If you remember the same situation arose with Abraham. He told both the Philistines and Egyptians the same story regarding Sarah.

Gen 26:8-15  And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.  (9)  And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.  (10)  And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.  (11)  And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.  (12)  Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.  (13)  And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:  (14)  For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.  (15)  For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

Gen 26:16-19  And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.  (17)  And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.  (18)  And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.  (19)  And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

Gen 26:20-22  And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well EsekH6230; because they strove with him.  (21)  And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it SitnahH7856.  (22)  And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

Part of Speech: noun proper masculine

The 2 words essentially have the same meaning and that being strife. Here we are in today’s world seeing Israel having to deal with the same people and the same hostility. Only in today’s world we see how fast the anti-Semitism can erupt on a global scale. On our way to explore the Egyptian empire we are running into the origins of many nations. Many having direct connections to Abraham. All of them having some form of hostility or another with the Israelites.

As we start to complete this journey we want to point out the fact that many new nations developed through Abraham. The origins of the Israelites were first and foremost as far as ABBA Father and Abraham are concerned. One nation with 12 tribes. He fathered Ishmael who goes on to have 12 sons of his own. They form what we might call the Persian Gulf states as we know them today. Then in a second marriage to a woman named Keturah who had 6 sons. They are all nations again who went on to have bad relations with Israel for the most part.

We will be seeing some of these nations off and on as we progress. This concludes our history of Abraham to this point. His encounters with Egypt and the Philistines shaped the way for many of these new nations. When we pick back up we will be starting the history of the Israelites in which all roads eventually led to Egypt.

Joh 8:56  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
