Jas 1:1-7 KJV  James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.  (2)  My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;  (3)  Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  (4)  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.  (5)  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  (6)  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  (7)  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Zec 10:1-12 KJV  Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.  (2)  For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.  (3)  Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.  (4)  Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.  (5)  And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded.  (6)  And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.  (7)  And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD.  (8)  I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.  (9)  And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again.  (10)  I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them.  (11)  And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away.  (12)  And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.

Hello again friends. We have arrived at the latter half of Zechariah 10. The prophecy at this point starts to deal with the tribe of Ephraim. 

Zec 10:7 KJV  And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD.

Below is a map of the united Israelite kingdom by tribes. As we can see Ephraim was just to the north of Judah and Benjamin. Verse 7 offers us a throwback to chapter 9.

Zec 9:13-17 KJV  When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.  (14)  And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.  (15)  The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.  (16)  And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.  (17)  For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Ephraim for those who may not be familiar was one of Joseph’s 2 sons that came back into the promised land in the Exodus. 

Gen 41:50-52 KJV  And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.  (51)  And Joseph called the name of the firstborn ManassehH4519: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.  (52)  And the name of the second called he EphraimH669: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

There is a bit of controversy associated to the blessings of Joseph’s 2 sons by Jacob. Jacob himself no stranger to controversy regarding the birthright that is. However as with all things God turns out correct at every turn.

Genesis 48:14

Israel stretched out his right hand, etc. - Laying hands on the head was always used among the Jews in giving blessings, designating men to any office, and in the consecration of solemn sacrifices. This is the first time we find it mentioned; but we often read of it afterwards. See Num_27:18, Num_27:23; Deu_34:9; Mat_19:13, Mat_19:15; Act_6:6; 1Ti_4:14. Jacob laid his right hand on the head of the younger, which we are told he did wittingly - well knowing what he was about, for (or although) Manasseh was the first-born, knowing by the Spirit of prophecy that Ephraim’s posterity would be more powerful than that of Manasseh. It is observable how God from the beginning has preferred the younger to the elder, as Abel before Cain; Shem before Japheth; Isaac before Ishmael; Jacob before Esau; Judah and Joseph before Reuben; Ephraim before Manasseh; Moses before Aaron; and David before his brethren. “This is to be resolved entirely into the wise and secret counsel of God, so far as it regards temporal blessings and national privileges, as the apostle tells us, Rom_9:11; See Clarke on Gen_25:23 (note). But this preference has no concern with God’s conferring a greater measure of his love and approbation on one person more than another; compare Gen_4:7, with Heb_11:4, and you will see that a difference in moral character was the sole cause why God preferred Abel to Cain.” - Dodd. The grace that converts the soul certainly comes from the mere mercy of God, without any merit on man’s part; and a sufficiency of this is offered to every man, Tit_2:11, Tit_2:12. But it is not less certain that God loves those best who are most faithful to this grace.

Joshua was of the tribe of Ephraim we found out through study. 

Num 13:8 KJV  Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

Num 13:16 KJV  These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.

1. The Patriarch

The younger of the two sons of Joseph and Asenath, born in Egypt. He and his brother Manasseh were adopted by Jacob, and ranked as his own sons, each becoming the ancestor of a tribe in Israel. In blessing his grandchildren, despite their father's protest, Jacob preferred the younger, foreshadowing the future eminence of his descendants (Gen_41:50; Gen_48:20). In the Blessing of Jacob however, the two are included under the name of Joseph (Gen_49:22 f).

2. The Tribe

At the first census on leaving Egypt, Ephraim's men of war numbered 40,500; and at the second census they are given as 32,500 (Num_1:33; Num_26:37). See, however, article NUMBERS. The head of the tribe at the Exodus was Elishama, son of Ammihud (Num_1:10). With the standard of the tribe of Ephraim on the West of the tabernacle in the desert march were Manasseh and Benjamin (Num_2:18). The Ephraimite among the spies was Hoshea (i.e. Joshua), the son of Nun (Num_13:8). At the division of the land Ephraim was represented by prince Kemuel, son of Shiphtan (Num_34:24). The future power of this tribe is again foreshadowed in the Blessing of Moses (Deu_33:17). When Moses died, a member of the tribe, Joshua, whose faith and courage had distinguished him among the spies, succeeded to the chief place in Israel. It was natural that the scene of national assemblies, and the center of the nation's worship, should be chosen within the land occupied by the children of Joseph, at Shechem and Shiloh respectively. The leadership of Ephraim was further emphasized by the rule of Samuel. From the beginning of life in Palestine they enjoyed a certain prestige, and were very sensitive on the point of honor (Jdg_7:24; Jdg_8:1; Jdg_12:1). Their acceptance of and loyalty to Saul, the first king chosen over Israel, may be explained by his belonging to a Rachel tribe, and by the close and tender relations existing between Joseph and Benjamin. But they were never reconciled to the passing of the scepter to Judah in the person of David (2Sa_2:8 f). That Israel would have submitted to the sovereignty of Absalom, any more than to that of David, is not to be believed; but his revolt furnished an opportunity to deal a shrewd blow at the power of the southern tribe (2Sa_15:13). Solomon's lack of wisdom and the crass folly of Rehoboam in the management of the northern tribes fanned the smoldering discontent into a fierce flame. This made easy the work of the rebel Jeroboam; and from the day of the disruption till the fall of the Northern Kingdom there was none to dispute the supremacy of Ephraim, the names Ephraim and Israel being synonymous. The most distinguished of Ephraim's sons were Joshua, Samuel and Jeroboam I.

3. The Territory

The central part of Western Palestine fell to the children of Joseph; and, while the boundaries of the territory allotted to Ephraim and Manasseh respectively are given in Jos_16:1-10; Jos_17:1, it seems to have been held by them in common for some time (Jos_17:14). The Canaanites in certain cities of both divisions were not driven out. It was probably thought more profitable to enslave them (Jos_16:10; Jos_17:13). The boundaries of Ephraim cannot be followed with accuracy, but roughly, they were as follows: The southern boundary, agreeing with the northern border of Benjamin, started from Bethel, and passed down westward by nether Beth-horon and Gezer toward the sea (Jos_16:3; in Jos_16:5 it stops at upper Beth-horon); it turned northward to the southern bank of the brook Kanah (Wādy Kānāh) along which it ran eastward (Jos_17:10) to Michmethath (the plain of Mukhneh); thence it went northward along the western edge of the plain to Shechem. It then bent eastward and southward past Taanath-shiloh (Ta‛ana), Janoah (Yanūn) to Ataroth and Naarah (unidentified) and the Jordan (Jos_16:7). From Ataroth, which probably corresponds to Ataroth-addar (Jos_16:5), possibly identical with the modern et-Trūneh, the southern border passed up to Bethel. Along the eastern front of the land thus defined there is a steep descent into the Jordan valley. It is torn by many gorges, and is rocky and unfruitful. The long slopes to the westward, however, furnish much of the finest land in Palestine. Well watered as it is, the valleys are beautiful in season with cornfields, vineyards, olives and other fruit trees. Ephraim as with all Israel fell into sin.

Hos 4:15-19 KJV  Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth.  (16)  For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.  (17)  Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.  (18)  Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.  (19)  The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Deu 30:1-7 KJV  And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,  (2)  And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;  (3)  That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.  (4)  If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:  (5)  And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.  (6)  And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.  (7)  And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee.

Neh 1:9 KJV  But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

Jer 51:50 KJV  Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.

Eze 6:9 KJV  And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

Zec 10:10 KJV  I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them.

Isa 19:21-25 KJV  And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it.  (22)  And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them.  (23)  In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.  (24)  In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:  (25)  Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.

Isa 27:12-13 KJV  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.  (13)  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

Hos 11:1-6 KJV  When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.  (2)  As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.  (3)  I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.  (4)  I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.  (5)  He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.  (6)  And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

Hos 11:7-12 KJV  And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.  (8)  How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.  (9)  I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.  (10)  They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.  (11)  They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.  (12)  Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Isa 60:18-22 KJV  Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.  (19)  The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.  (20)  Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.  (21)  Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.  (22)  A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time.

Zec 10:11 KJV  And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away.

Verse 11 as with some other verses we have explored recently point right toward the works of Yeshua here on earth. Jesus did pass through the sea of affliction in more ways than we could ever comprehend. Yeshua or Jesus did smite the waves of the sea. When we stop and think about things like this it’s easy to see why we should fear the Lord. The last half of this verse sounds like some pretty radical changes are going to be made. There of course is always lots more to come in association to this. Not to mention the saving of the Israelites crossing the sea on dry ground. 

Psa 66:1-7 KJV  To the chief Musician, A Song or Psalm. Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:  (2)  Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious.  (3)  Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee.  (4)  All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah.  (5)  Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men.  (6)  He turned the sea into dry land: they went through the flood on foot: there did we rejoice in him.  (7)  He ruleth by his power for ever; his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.

Psa 66:8-12 KJV  O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:  (9)  Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.  (10)  For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.  (11)  Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.  (12)  Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

Isa 42:13-16 KJV  The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.  (14)  I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.  (15)  I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.  (16)  And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

Isa 43:1-9 KJV  But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.  (2)  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  (3)  For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.  (4)  Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.  (5)  Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;  (6)  I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;  (7)  Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.  (8)  Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.  (9)  Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

Zec 10:12 KJV  And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.

Psa 68:31-35 KJV  Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.  (32)  Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:  (33)  To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.  (34)  Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.  (35)  O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Mat 10:22-28 KJV  And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.  (23)  But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.  (24)  The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.  (25)  It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?  (26)  Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.  (27)  What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.  (28)  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Mat 10:30-36 KJV  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  (31)  Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.  (32)  Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.  (33)  But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.  (34)  Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.  (35)  For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.  (36)  And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Mat 10:22 KJV  And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
